World’s Largest Cruise Ship
The European unit of STX Group handed over the world’s largest cruise ship to Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines at a shipyard in Turku, Finland on Wednesday, the group said Thursday.
Named the Oasis of the Seas, the vessel offers a number of innovations and will begin her maiden cruise with Royal Caribbean, the second largest cruise operator in the world, in the Caribbean Sea in December.
The W1.8 trillion (US$1=W1,198) ship has an ice rink, a water park, a carousel, a basketball court, a rock climbing wall, a 600-meter running track and a theater that seats some 1,400 people.
The technical highlight of the vessel is a 100 m-long and 19 m-wide open park at its center. Leaving the center of a cruise ship open in such a way was thought to be a structural impossibility, but STX’s engineers managed to do it and the green park was built inside.
“The Oasis of the Seas is the culmination of numerous cutting-edge technologies,” said STX Europe CEO Shin Sang-ho. “We are in talks with other major cruise operators for more orders.”
